James Brighouse
James Brighouse is the founder of the Latter-day Saint movement called the Order of Enoch, which broke from the RLDS church in Independence, Missouri in 1884. Brighouse claimed to be the 18th reincarnation of Jesus Christ and the “One Mighty and Strong” foretold by Joseph Smith who would set Jesus Christ’s house in order. Brighouse also claimed to be the reincarnation of Adam, Enoch, Moses, David, Ezekiel, George Washington, and Joseph Smith. He prophesied that he would be reincarnated in the year 1912 in Jerusalem.
Brighouse ordained 2 sets of 12 apostles. The Order of Enoch believed that Brigham Young was not a prophet; however, the Order believed that Joseph Morris was a prophet and a martyr. Brighouse taught against the practice of polygamy, believing that Joseph Smith had sinned and was killed because of polygamy. Unlike other LDS leaders of the period, Brighouse taught that Africans could hold the priesthood, as they were not the descendants of Cain.
